It would seem to be the fate of past imperial powers to do their historical penance as seedy backwaters.
In the minds of the majority, the myths of the past trump the political realities of the present.
It is a classic historical accident that internal divisions in the Conservative Party have initiated the process which will quite likely put the UK on the path to global irrelevance.
