Excellent readings of the opening sentences. Both/and. All of the above.
And, with each word, P pulls the reader in deeper. Hard to bring a
beginner's mind this many years after reading that first page for the first
time under skies full of actual screaming fighter planes while living and
working on a US Army base that was rumored to have nuclear missiles in the
top secret Air Force base at the top of the hill within our Army base next
to the DMZ in Korea and collecting combat pay in '73 when this "WWII novel"
was new. I know other readers who reacted the same way when they
encountered GR while serving in Vietnam.
