I have always thought w Pynchon that his monster from the North is related
to History, the step-function that is the disaster that might be. Western
eschatology overturned. K Kong related to Gojiro conceptually,  born of the
atomic BOMB. The Trespaasers from the future, victims and survivors of some
apocalyptic event. To warn the inhabitants of the present to change the
future.

Worlds, which quite consciously asked the imperial UK "What if London were
attacked by a force as superior to us as our forces are to the Mahdi's
