63-70 (Viking) Anyway, the dream sequence looks or rather sounds like an
exercise in jazz-like improvisation with recurring themes. When reaching
the iron tunnel, Slothrop still hears "Cherokee" faintly (65V). In the
shitwave passage he notes, "it's worse than being torpedoed by the Japs"
(66V), which refers back/forward to Kennedy (whose ship was actually rammed
rather than torpedoed). Then, mentioning Pearl Harbor (67V), he refers
back/forward to the "Japs", and closing the sequence, just before
introducing the Crutchfield theme, Red Malcolm comes back again (67V). Red
River Valley from 68V is recurring on 70V ("sweet baby carrots"), and of
course it all ends with the Kenosha Kid coming back as a chorus.
