I was watching the election results with about two-dozen people on Tuesday.
The mood over the course of the evening was about what you might expect. I
went home with someone I didn't really know, we needed the company. One
line that was rattling around my head throughout the night: "There is time,
if you need the comfort, to touch the person next to you." It felt like I
needed it. Just before we got into bed she went to put a record on. We
talked about it. There was only one thing that made sense. Songs of Leonard
Cohen. Then Songs from a Room. It was Cohen all night. It helped. The music
was important. How often is the soundtrack of your life exactly right, when
it feels like the emotional stakes are high. Not all the time, for me. I
don't think I'll forget it. Especially not now. Feels like he was winking
at me on his way out the door.
