Bob Dylan writes amazing songs, but they are not literature.

I have always considered the lyrics, at least his work beginning with Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, to be some pretty amazing poetry. A friend of mine who came of age in Pinochet's Chile told me once that Dylan's recordings made him decide to try living in the USA, since it produced such a genius.
I am also certain that the deaf can appreciate the words of Dylan and that it constitutes "literature." Whatever the hell that is, as Steinbeck might have put it.

Yes, there it is. Dylan's Nobel was a cynical play. No slight to Dylan. Slight to Nobel as a prize, and to its selectors.
