You've got to give it to people for working with the tools and materials at
their disposal.

When Roy Harper was staying with us for several weeks way back in the 90s,
he wanted to go to a different bar every night to watch baseball. (Roy
would mime the physical idiosyncrasies of every major league pitcher and
batter and usually would if there was enough space on the floor of the bar
in front of the tv) He always drank a cheap American beer like PB while I,
who have grave sensitivities to all the sugar in American beers would have
to spring for a Bass (pre-US owndership)  or Guinness.  When it was time
for Roy to leave (he'd been holding over at my house waiting for his
girlfriend to finish a leg of the Appalachian trail ("Allan, she's young
and she's going to be away for weeks. Doncha think it was correct of me to
tell her I know she's going to want to have sex but to only do it with a
condom? That's not asking too much, is it?" (I guess  hiking the
Appalachian trail was somewhat different than I ever thought it would
be.)), in fact, I believe this happened when he was shouldering his bag, he
looked me full in the face to apparently emphasize the seriousness of his
final words to me (which these turned out to not be) and said "Allan, did
you ever wonder why all those nights I drank those American beers while you
pushed for the Guinness and Bass? That's because in all of my years in the
public I don't think I ever met a lad who worked at those breweries who
didn't brag about pissing in the vats."  In saying this, Roy was pretty
clear that this was a triumph of class warfare but in writing this I have
to wonder if these beers really are not the choice of the British working
classes.
