Scholarly articles on M & D are full of those slippery words like
'postmodern'
and 'historicity' in talking about the dual century structure.

I'll suggest this without slippery words, unless I slip up. The major
reason and
the major beautiful effect is to say/show pattern(s) in American history.

P sees deep themes in America in a structural way: from then through now.

I know of nothing quite like it, (but I dislike most historical fiction so
haven't read much).
