Tancredi in AtD

Hey Smoke an Y'all,

Just got around to following up my own inquiry. How? Consulting the Oracle:
GOOGLE. A quick search reveals my lack of culture and general ignorance.
First search result is the opera Tancredi by Rossini, a composer that
Pyncho is clearly familiar with; the work is based on Voltaire's
"Tancrède".

In view of the above, I rather think it more likely that Pynchon came to
the name by way of opera. He may also have noted (or later became aware of)
other possible allusions. But that's just my two bits. I guess I should
look at Tim Ware's mail more closely and get in on the annotation game.

ciao
mc
