It’s interesting where one finds books. After I had gotten the P bug but hadn’t read it, I found an old beat up copy of V in a used book store in Kuta Beach, Bali. On the flight back to Dubai I took it out to read as the plane was loading passengers. A coulee of women speaking German were settling down in front of me and one glanced back and saw the book. She was quite familiar with P and started a conversation with me. Seems she edited a small literary journal and had just published an article on P. She showed it to me with a picture she was quite proud of. It was her in man’s hat and overcoat, her head turned away. The site of the picture was, “Thomas Pynchon??”. It was one of the more interesting flights I’ve been on.
