older book Herrndorf's "Sand"

I read it. Its an interesting off-beat take on the spy/intrigue game. equal
parts suspense and buffoonery (with some torture thrown in). I liked that
the story upsets expectations at every turn

I also highly recommend reading the afterword which illuminated things that
I had missed.
