I love "Sand" and wonder how "Schamott" in the final, devastating sentence
was translated into English.
Herrndorf's breakthrough was "Tschick" ('Why We Took the Car') which is very
different but also highly recommended. He was also a very accomplished
painter.
"Sand" was at least partly written while Herrndorf was suffering from brain
cancer (he eventually committed suicide; his by turns harrowing,
fascinating, funny, sad and very literary diary/blog "Arbeit und Struktur"
has been published as a book and is still online).
