Y'all know I love my man Stanley Kubrick just as much as I do Pynchon.
I haven't been keeping up my blog, but I really wanted to share this
article with y'all. It's something I've noticed in my own life, living
in what some might consider to be crummy areas (some of my best, most
loyal friends made there)... and that's the fact that Kubrick's movies
really seem to speak deeply to (pardon the gross cliche) my younger,
minority friends. I suppose some might find that counterintuitive. I
don't. There's something about the unambiguous ambiguity of Kubrick's
work (yes, I mean that) that really resonates strongly with streetwise
people's bullshit detectors (and my black friends have the sharpest
bullshit detectors of anyone I know). It's like, as they're watching,
say, 2001 or The Shining or even Paths of Glory (I spent a lot of time
salon'ing flicks in my apartment in the so-called "jungle" of
Jane/Wilson in upper Toronto), they know they're getting "the real
thing". Everyone especially loved The Killing (once they got over the
black and white).
Does this gel with anyone else's experience? You'd think young people
today would find SK corny... and SOME parts of it they do, of course.
But overall, I've found they're pretty freaking excited by his work,
and gravitate towards his persona. Even just the name - KOO-brick -
they like, and never forget.
This article here speaks to all of the above, and more...
