Small point: J. G. Ballard's novel CRASH was published in 1973, so not 
"decades later" than the 1960s. (See the book's record in the US Library

David Cronenberg adapted the novel into the film of the same name in 
1996 (IMDB: <https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115964/>).
