Abstract:
In this paper, I consider the sex scenes that involve two of Thomas Pynchon‟s memorable female heroines, namelyThe Crying of Lot 49's Oedipa Maas and Bleeding Edge's Maxine Tarnow. Their respective sexual encounters neither happen at random nor do they serve merely to achieve a comic effect. Rather, their occurrence intersects with some of the most salient themes in the novels, such as anxieties about freedom, complicity, and self-debasement. A close look at how these intimate encounters happen also reveals that far from being passive victims, Maxine and Oedipa are complex subjects that bear various and even conflicting desires
