The White Visitation and the Plague

Been reading Defoe’s *Journal of the Plague Year.* Like Camus’s book, its European sensibility compels it to consider the plague as something that disappears and re-emerges almost at random—though for Defoe this is a much more immanent process.

The main thing that strikes me so far as that when the plague returns, it is referred to as the “visitation.” This also seems to be a sort of darkly loaded way of referring to the intervention of divine power.

This is likely known and annotated to P readers, but as I haven’t consulted any others’ notes on GR for some time, it has really struck me.
