Hector mentions a time when Zoyd surfed the pier at Gordita during a “lightnín” storm.

This, and Buster’s interpellation of Zoyd as former teammate could, though, certainly be pure improv. Both are nudges (Hector nerving Zoyd up by appealing to his surfer prowess, Buster nudging the logger to picture Zoyd as a local boy) and not purely informational statements.

Or could the idea of Zoyd as ex-footballer and trans person be a reference to the John Lithgow role, Roberta Muldoon, in the World According to Garp movie? Not a lot to pin this on, but it was a good movie. “I cut mine off on purpose.” (Or words to that effect)

Ned Bottom the weaver, the precursor of Ned Lud, about to wake and stumble about as Queen Frenesi-Titania’s crush with the signs of his asininity sprouting from the sides of his head -coterminous, perhaps, with cuckold’s horns.

the play at the behest of agent of state power Brock, a priority gig like Theseus’s command performance, taken as lightly by the audience (the federal courts and the solid citizens who glimpse it on local news) and as seriously by the performers (if you include Ralph Jr, van Meter, and Hector) as that one

Intertextural references could also include Dante, with those 7 terraces at the Wayvone Mansion, couldn’t they?
