Mark Kohut:
They USED to carry messages. Just like the Pentocostal dove did.

Messenger pigeons are often incorrectly categorized as English Carrier pigeons, an ancient breed of fancy pigeons. They were used historically to send messages but lost the homing instinct long ago.
Wait, how did they lose the homing instinct?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Carrier_pigeon
By the mid 19th century, the points in the standard of the English Carrier were deemed to have been achieved, and the breed was praised for its "perfectness to which all the points most admired have been brought".[3] At this point the colors of the breed were limited to black, white and dun (a brownish grey color).[3] Today, the English Carrier is strictly a show pigeon, and is not the modern homing pigeon. This modern homing pigeon is a breed known as a Racing Homer, a breed which was bred from eight different pigeon breeds including the English Carrier.[4]
So it was bred out of them. What kind of show would do that?

but back to the Pentecostal idea - "...from someplace far across the ocean, landing and taking off again one by one, each bearing a message for him, but none of whom, light pulsing in their wings, he could ever quite get to in time. He understood it to be another deep nudge from forces unseen..."
The dove was at the Baptism, the tongues of fire were at Pentecost, they both were manifestations of the Holy Spirit that were given and received - here the message is offered but our preterite hero's speed isn't up to reception of it

There's a Six Rivers in Northern California too, not far from the bar,
so Buster might be talking about playing in the conference in Six
Rivers California. Hard to say. My guess is Buster makes this up.
Bartenders must be quick witted and get patrons to drink nice
together, bust up unwanted advances that have the potential to bounce
into a bar brawl, introduce regulars to not so regulars...
A lot of nudging Zoyd from that dream window to the fake one. Typecast.
-----------Typecast? who or what? the window? the nudging? Buster? Zoyd? Meaning there's a "Zoyd" type out there some of this is drawn from?

----------- Zoyd as Pynchon? 17 years after GR, he's recycling cigarette butts, got to issue a new novel?

I like this take only because it is so twisted. Trans Zoyd is a wild new
thought.

-----------there is a certain amount of inversion in that direction, doing the parenting, the "schoolmarm" reference at his wedding, (some of) the females' adventures seeming more like the stuff you routinely see males doing and their excesses characterized as peccadilloes.
