Interesting. In the other three instances in the book, "night-riders" refer
to the KKK, so I thought "making pests of ourselves" meant harassing
passers-by. I'm not sure why innocent riders should be even shot _at_ for
risking their own lives in the wilderness. On the other hand, a violent
gang definitely should be.
