"Gillespie told me stories about Pynchon at Cornell. He was well known as
the guy who knew everything. Gillespie said he and Pynchon had taken a
class on Ulysses together, in which the teacher had assigned each student a
page of Joyce’s novel to gloss.
'I showed up on the day I was to deliver the report on my assigned page and
I hadn’t done the work,' Bob said. 'Pynchon was sitting on the polished
granite floor outside the classroom and volunteered to have a look. He
proceeded down the page, line by line, annotating references, allusions,
etymologies, symbols and so forth.' There was still wonder in Gillespie’s
voice as he told the story."
