I should add "in hall" implies meals (lunch/formal dinner) within a
Cambridge college (there are 31 within the university; less so at
time within the novel). Being a public place I would guess Cyprian tried to
kiss the other man or showed public display of affection which caused the
drama. maybe this is all in the companion sites online
