away a dozen
times tonight, into the dark, to sedate Fox (his generic term for any
patient—run
three times around the building without thinking of a fox and you can cure
anything).

I don’t think that there is ANY ambiguity in the words above about
noun/verb roles:

1.  “Syringe” is a noun.

2.  “[To] spike” is a verb.

Period.
