GR translation: deny him/deny his gift

What about "on the short end of 5-to-2 deny his gift" then? I know "5-to-2"
refers to the odds Lamplighter offered earlier. In what way did Nora "deny
his gift"? Did she actually bet against it? It seems unlikely since she was
the one who first witnessed it.
