some random, non-original thoughts on Vineland
1. Frenesi's real hair color--what is it? I assume brunette but most of
what we get is basically her baby blues and her stunning legs
2. How so much of the book would not seem out of place in the Simpsons, the
side gags, particularly with animals. i find that pretty funny
3. the peregrinations of Frenesi, Zoyd, DL and others does lend itself to
mapping Pynchon's real-life wanderings across America: Columbus, Santa Fe,
Montana, Oklahoma City, etc. We get more of that in AtD and BE, but it
really highlights Pynchon's claim about having major writer's block in one
of his letters as he mentions being in Arkansas, Texas and other places.
4. Mucho's amicable divorce is mentioned--does that change our views on
Oedipa and the ending of Lot 49 in any way like Pynchon's revisiting creepy
aspects of V. in AtD in a better light (thinking the Paris episodes)
5. eternal mysteries: ChipCo's vendetta for Takeshi, Blood and Vato and
Brock at the end of his line, Prarie's wish for Brock to come back, Sasha
has young lovers and the weird reunion with her daughter and grandaughter
6. and finally, the last line "something like home"--is that not as happy
as first thought?
maybe more who knwos?
