Maxine is a wonderful character- complicated and interesting,. She draws the reader in. We learn a lot by her pursuits of fraudulence on all levels, not least of which is her all too human inability to know herself completely; a mirror perhaps of the limitations of objectivity. Windust is a dickhead, but there's no proof that he had anything to do with Lester's murder, as tempting as it is to go down that path. Of course he might have, but it's all circumstantial, like the evidence of Putin's murder of 300 innocent Russians in apartment bombings in order to justify the Second Chechnyan War and foster his own political ambitions.

Our hero revels in uncertainty,

Maxine is all in for Windust and his not-small hardon. Conkling smells a
connection to Lester Traipse.
"Windust was there when Lester was taken out, and maybe he even did it".

Maxine dresses hot--"turns on the sexy" as a female friend of mine called
it--- because "field research"...And her Vertex-Vortex of Feminity is
sending messages.
