NP More William Hurt, kind mensch. (I hear his partner, Marilee Matlin, has counterstories. Sad) .This from a writer I know...Thane Rosenbaum.

William Hurt died yesterday.
We did an event years ago in connection with his little known film,
"Varian's War: The Forgotten Hero." William played Varian Fry, who rescued
many famous artists and writers from France during the Holocaust.
During the Q & A, Varian Fry's widow, whose presence was a surprise, stood
up, introduced herself, and with great agitation in her voice, proceeded to
denounce the movie for adding a love interest who she claims never existed.
(Julia Ormond plays the colleague and lover who works along with Fry to
rescue Jews.)
William didn't write the movie, nor direct it. He simply played Mrs. Fry's
late husband. He could easily and smugly have ignored her complaint.
Instead, he took responsibility for the pain the film caused Fry's widow.
He graciously apologized for the artistic liberty of adding a fictitious
romance to a story about rescue.
Whenever I spoke, saw or received an email from William, I was instantly
reminded of how sensitive and gentle he was with that older woman whose
life was hijacked by Hollywood.
He showed a similar sensitivity when our mutual friend, Isaiah Sheffer, the
impresario and co-founder of Symphony Space, died.
William may have looked the part of a Hollywood handsome actor who received
an Oscar. But I can attest he was also a mensch
May your memory be a blessing, William.
