I met Charles Hollander in Cologne in 2002. He was kind and personable and gifted me two of his essays for Pynchon Notes, "Pynchon's Politics: The Presence of an Absence" and "Pynchon, JFK and the CIA: Magic Eye Views of /The Crying of Lot 49/". I learned a lot from them. In the latter article, he focused on the parapolitical aspect of Pynchon's novels. Comrade in arms, indeed.

I am looking at his handwriting right now. RIP, Max.
