Mark, Pynchon's not including something explicitly doesn't mean we aren't
supposed to follow a somewhat more subtle clue. What if the story actually
satirizes people like Callisto who take the idea of entropy to heart in the
wrong way? Callisto's (would-be worldly wise) pessimism may make him rather
stupid, so that, for example, he kills the bird he's trying to save,
drawing heat out of it instead of communicating his own warmth to it.
