My mental picture is
- insult is anything (words or actions) that “turns inwards” and causes pain
- outrage is a state of mind preparing to take violent action, “raging out”
Normally - like in dueling - a combatant would receive an insult, make note
of it, and only then respond with a challenge or immediate violence
(outrage)
So imho that’s an escalation, but it seems like the person is saying they
skipped step 1.
However, I do not find this passage in Power Moby-Dick chapter 90. Where is
it?
