The book begins with a dream/nightmare of the fantasist surrogate, Pirate Prentice. This fantasy, steeped in realistic imagery mixed with magical elements, portrays one vision of death: static, jaws-agape, as queues of sheep move toward it. Both a holocaust and a D-Day description of death. As Pirate comes awake, the slaughterhouse imagery becomes the sprawled, sleeping intoxicated survivors of last night’s debauchery. Pirate relieves himself, after saving Bloat, and heads to the roof where he has built a greenhouse to grow bananas. He sees on the horizon a vapor trail that he surmises must be the V-2 rocket. He wonders whether to take action but decides to pick bananas. He gathers bananas for one of his famous banana breakfasts. He imagines the V-2 rocket targeting him specifically to the point of it hitting his head before exploding. He descends again.
