At this point what do I know about these characters?

Bruno Airmont - he's the Sultan of Swat — er, no, he's the Al Capone of Cheese (or "Cheez")

Name suggests "mountain(s) in the air";

Giordano Bruno, memory-maven, burned at the stake, "cruelly", as James Joyce characterized it. Or was that "horribly" - wasn't it Deasey, or was it somebody else (I'm sure it wasn't Leopold Bloom) who on the topic of Bruno said, "He was a terrible heretic," to which Stephen replies, "and he was terribly burned"

It would take some doing to connect that to the plot here, but not impossible (imho); left as an exercise for interested party or parties

Bruno also is a kind of a "tough-guy" sounding name, isn't it?

Bruce Willis (requiescat in pace) at one point cut an album called "The Return of Bruno"

- I'm quite willing to accept Bruno Airmont as the Sultan of Swing - er, no, the Al Capone of Cheese, even though iirc he doesn't do much in the book except go to the movies with his daughter, and be a presence???

Daphne - Bruno's daughter

River-deity's daughter Daphne in Ovid's Metamorphoses when pursued by Apollo given the grace to transform into a tree - she must've really not wanted to be with Apollo

IIRC she was engaged to some dude but ran off with a clarinet player? Or was that April?Daphne shows up pretty often in the book so we will pin those facts down.


Ernst Hauffnitz - he's the sub captain.

U-13 - the submarine. Now, I was able to access an exclusive database of German submarines (called "Wikipedia") and they were actually named/designated/numbered in just such fashion.

Confusingly, so were the "classes" of subs.


In this our shared reality (rather than within ST),
