i guess it must be because it’s so cold here in minnesota that hats are an enticing thing to make. once upon a time, i saw a really nice hat. it had ridges. it was made of more of a knit.. but it was way too expensive. i didn’t have the exact fabric i’d like to make it out of, so i decided a fleece would do for now. it would at least test my theory of how to make it, and be warm.

i sewed a tube, then sewed in the ridges, then spent a while figuring out how to close the top. i wound up sewing in 4 panels. not exactly what i wanted but previous attempt of sewing a circle in the top wound up wonky. overall, i’m pretty happy with it, but i think future me will use this knowledge to make a better hat someday.

I have never sewn texture into a garment by folding material like that. But I have wondered about it a few times. Would it be easier if you sewed the ridges into the material before cutting it out and making it into a tube?

    It does look cute.

the only thing about sewing it after is that then the ridges will be flattened where you sew them together to create the tube shape. sewing the ridges are easy, but you do have to know how tight you want it to be before you add them.
