"typical Woolfian Orlando riff"--a bit reductive if you ask me.  And 
except for the weirdness of just trying to figure him out, there's 
nothing awkward at all about this speculation.  I've wondered too.  
Because it's such convincing satire I've often thought that Pynchon may 
intend Slothrop to've had more than a minor adjustment in that early 
intrusive plastic surgery.  It's a little crazy, it seems, but I have 
actually sort of worked it out so that it works (all this double entendre 
is getting out of hand.)
