For what it's worth: Last week's Manhattan Beach CA's _The Beach Reporter-
featured a column on Pynchon and his roots in the South Bay (as we call it
here). It discussed his works and the time he spent in the El Porto section of
Manhattan Beach while writing GR. The columnist also claimed to have spoken
with two eyewitnesses who "hung" withn TRP, one of whom claimed to have seen
him in 1975 on the street and when he went to say "hi," a nearby public phone
rang and the alleged TRP ran away immediately.
To be honest, while I disdain the Pynchon huntÐÐleave him be--I found the
piece entertaining. It has that beach city apocryphal feel.
