Fractals again....

I know someone asked if Pynchon could have read anything by Mandelbrot
before the publication of Gravity's Rainbow, but I can't remember if
anyone confirmed it.

Well, Mandelbrot had an article in SCIENCE in 1967 entitled "How Long
is the Coastline of Britain", although he didn't coin the term "fractal"
until 1975 or 1977 depending on which book you read.
