When I was in Norway in August, I noticed John McClure's
bright new book _Late Imperial Romance_ in the superb
Oslo U campus bookstore. I could not afford it at that
moment, but on the basis of my flickthrough the scholar
reads esp. _V._ in connection with "late imperial romances"
of Conrad, Kipling, and Forster. Owing to McClure, Pynchon
succeeds better than e.g. DeLillo, Didion, or R. Stone in
challenging that romance tradition, even though or because
his texts employ its conventions.
And wasn't there someone giving a talk on Pynchon and
postcolonialism at the Warwick conference?
