It's no surprise that of all the reports I've read about C. Mason and J. 
Dixon, none agree on their actual professions.  They have been called:  
both as surveyors, Mason an astronomer, Dixon, a surveyor, both as 
mathematicians, scientists, jolly brandy swiggers (heheh).
