In the Fall 1994 issue of The Paris Review, there is a fascinating interview
with Robert Gottlieb (a long-time editor for Simon & Schuster and Knopf)
where several he and several of the authors he edits discuss the process and
his role. I know it sounds dry, but it's very interesting.
