Has' "Saragossa Manuscript" has just recently been released on VHS
(courtesy of the Chicago Polish Society), and should be available
at specialty video outlets in NYC. I saw this film many times
in the '60s and '70s and found its narrative complexity
fascinating, though it hardly matches GR. There's a certain paranoia
mixed in, though not of the 20thC. kind. Great visual style and
music/sound by the young Krzystof Penderecki. Haven't seen the video,
but my understanding is that the print is good, and it's letterbox
format (the movie was filmed in wide-screen B/W).
The movie was patterned after portions of Potocki's book, which,
until a recent edition (Penguin USA 656PP 0-670-83428-9 $27.95 hardcover)
was published fragmentarily. Current title is "The Manuscript Found in
Saragossa"; I was introduced to the work via a portion entitled "The New
Decameron", published in the 70's. I believe there was a review of the
Penguin edition mid-summer or fall of last year in the NYT Book Review.
