Of course, the possibility also exists that this is a variation of 
Stencil's third person self referance.  In Stencil's case, he refers
to himself as someone else; in the case of Blood and Vato, they refer
to someone else as themself....  Not that I think this is a terribly 
useful observation.  It's been awhile since I read Vineland.
