Proper Naming

Would Pynchons' or any other writers' use of proper names as integral
parts of their creations be comparable (com parable?) with ancestral
peoples (never liked that Native American moniker) namings like Sitting
Bull, Lame Deer, etc. I guess my point is can a "character" in a novel
be defined by just one name?
