Someone with the Bernays essay handy will probably answer this. I
associate toasting with breakfast cereals and coffee, but this could
be faulty memory. Since it's the tobacco that's toasted (cured),
"it's toasted" sounds more appropriate. Only discrete objects like
the cigarettes themselves or political leaders are properly referred
to as "they". It's toasted and they're bad for you.
