small point of didactism:  "curing" tobacco is accomplished through 
hanging it do dry and (somewhat) age in drying sheds.  A further step in 
the process of cigarette manufacture can be "toasting," as in heating it 
to drive off certain volatile chemicals.

"Bad for you" makes sense if you accept a definition of "good life = long 
life."
