Academia v. The Rest

I think that Gore Vidal is full of it.  But be that as it may, I have 
often wondered whether or not this list for example is dominated by 
academic types or everyone else.  While Pynchon is certainly ripe for 
academic analysis, I also think that he is also particularly suited for 
the overly-imaginative pleasure reader.  Just a thought...and in now way 
should this be considered as a slam against any of the academics who 
frequent this list who have always demonstrated themselves to be 
considerate and thoughtful.
