I had a difficult time getting through the "Chinese" parts of this novel. 
I suspect it was because I was so enthralled with the main character's 
adventures I resented having to read the long "dramatic" parts. I 
wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have some common influences from the 
various influential substances floating around Northern California. I'm 
sorry they didn't influence me to the same degree! :)
