My take on Mike Davis/Lot 49 was that L.A. is not the most technologized
city, it IS technology, literally created. It used to be a desert. (Being
from L.A, I have an interesting perspective on this idea). But before it
became the modern technopolis it is (which anticipates its BLADE RUNNER
prophecies), it was a tourist trap. In Lot 49, San Narciso/Los Angeles is
techware (remember the printed circuit allusion). In front of the motel
Oedipa rooms in at the beginning, she sees a technologized version of herself
(Metropolis anyone?), a half-naked siren beckoning to the citizens of S.N.
