I tend to disagree with Cheuse most of the time.  I never heard his
Vineland review, and now you've got me curious.  What was it that made it
"clear that not only GR, but also, Pynchon's whole refusal to play the game
... had been chafing against Cheuse's sense of well being for years"?  Are
you referring to something other than the Vineland review?  Do you have a
transcription?
