Wouldn't one say that it is plenty sad that Mason searches the heavens 
for Rebekah, when in reality, he is only peering at the stars as they 
appeared millions of years ago?  i.e. by looking towards the future, the 
heavens, Mason is unwittingly and metaphorically reviewing the past.  
which leads me to ask, does an event like the Transit of Venus signal a 
break in that this event is perceived as happening now, it's visible 
beauty so immediate and stunning, even to those not used to scanning the 
skies....
