Fascinating.  Fowles, Chandler, and le Carre -- especially le Carre -- 
passed through my mind when I amended my own list, but such thoughts were 
probably suppressed by some anonymous cabal of literary-fascist neurons 
and loaded into boxcars headed for the epidermis.
