     This is a forward from the H(istory of)-Film list.  If John Mascaro 
     decides to apply for this one, given his new-found interest in the 
     cinema of the Great One, maybe we should all write some testimonials 
     for him.
     
     P.S.  New Yorkers, if you haven't yet gone to see the Henry Darger 
     exhibit at the Museum of American Folk Art, w-well, GO!  It's some of 
     the most amazing art I've ever seen -- insider, outsider, whatever.  
     (Fuck the categories, I say.)  I've been twice already and I plan to 
     go a few more times before the exhibit moves on.  When you scrape 
     yourselves up from the floor, do cross the street and pay me a visit.

     LECTURERSHIP IN
     LITERATURE AND FILM STUDIES  (UNITED STATES)

     Department of Literature, University of Essex
     
     Applications are invited for a full-time Lectureship in Literature and 
     Film Studies in the Department of Literature, to commence from 1st 
     September 1997.
     
     The purpose of the post is to consolidate the teaching of film studies 
     at Essex by developing its links with both literature and the study of 
     the United States.
     
     Candidates must have a proven record of research in the area, along 
     with teaching experience.
     
      Appointment will be at an appropriate point at either Lecturer A 
     (#15,154 - #19,848 per annum, under review) or Lecturer B scale 
     (#20,677 - #26,430, under review).
     
      The Department of Literature is a member of the School of Humanities 
     and Comparative Studies.  Members of the Department have teaching and
     research interests across a wide range of literatures, in English and 
     other languages.  One of the Department s two major undergraduate 
     degrees is in English and United States Literature.  The appointee 
     will be based in the Department of Literature and will be expected to 
     contribute to the Department's teaching and research.  However, strong 
     links will be maintained with the current Film Studies postholder and 
     with the United States area.  Film Studies has recently been 
     re-established at Essex with a post in the Department of Art History 
     and Theory.  The considerable library holdings (and some equipment) 
     are now being extended; and there is much enthusiasm for film among 
     members of several departments in the School of Humanities and 
     Comparative Studies.  The School also offers an extremely popular 
     interdisciplinary BA in United States Studies.

     Essential experience, skills and attributes of post-holder:
     Those necessary to consolidate the teaching of film studies at Essex 
     by developing its links with both literature and the study of the 
     United States. To this end, the person appointed will develop new film 
     courses at both graduate and undergraduate level.  The graduate course 
     will form part of the recently established MA in Film Studies.  The 
     undergraduate course will be open to students of United States 
     literature and the interdisciplinary United States area degree. A 
     short (one-page) outline proposal of a graduate course (10 x two 
     hours) should be included with the application.
     
     Desirable experience, skills and attributes of the post-holder
     A demonstrable ability to contribute to the development of one or more 
     of the following: native american studies, feminist studies, american 
     studies more broadly (with knowledge of Spanish).
